What does Bitcoin price mean?

The Bitcoin price is the amount of a quote currency exchanged for one BTC. A BTC/USD quote of $80,000, for example, means one Bitcoin is valued at 80,000 US dollars on that market. You can buy or sell fractions of a Bitcoin; the quote does not mean you must trade a whole coin.

There is no single global Bitcoin order book. Each exchange matches its own buyers and sellers, so prices can differ slightly between venues. A headline price can also be a composite of several markets. The venue and timestamp help explain which price you are looking at.

What moves the Bitcoin price?

Bitcoin’s price changes as buyers and sellers compete for available liquidity. The long-term supply schedule is one part of the story; the price of the next trade also depends on how much demand and sell-side liquidity are present at that moment. A limited supply does not prevent a falling price.

For traders, the useful question is how a catalyst interacts with the chart. A macro release can change expectations about rates or the dollar. A crypto-specific announcement can change participation. In leveraged markets, forced liquidations can accelerate an existing move. The same news can produce different outcomes depending on positioning and how much was already expected.

Reading a Bitcoin price change

A percentage change compares two prices: (new price − starting price) ÷ starting price × 100. In a hypothetical move from $80,000 to $82,000, Bitcoin rises $2,000, or 2.5%. The move is the same percentage whether you hold one BTC or 0.01 BTC; the dollar exposure changes with the position size.

A “24-hour change” is usually a rolling comparison, while a daily candle follows its chart timezone. Those can show different percentages without either being wrong. Look at the period alongside the number.
